A remote river in southwest Alaska abounds with ptarmigan, teal and tundra trout. Two fishers and hunters discover this to their delight and a little dismay, as they cannot decide whether to hunt for the birds or just go fishing.

Ken Duton and other scientists exploring the Boulder Patch of the Beaufort Sea report remarkable numbers of species existing in the frozen waters. The area is so cold ice covers the sea for nine months each year.
