The fearful and the fanciful: early tourists' perceptions of Western Melanesia

Article Abstract:

Early tourists saw the fearful and the fanciful in Western Melanesia according to a study of early literature. Describing the first stage of tourist interest and how perceptions continue to influence tourism images of the region can be useful. Historical studies can provide background material for academic researchers, consultants and planners. Proposals that had been tried and failed could be avoided. The study is intended to encourage re-examination of early publications from the point of view of tourism as a discipline, not the more traditional academic approaches.
