McCormick Place in Chicago, an economic hub whose impact flows through the city's hospitality, retail and tourism industries, underwent an $850 million expansion with the aim of reshaping and rebuilding architecture, culture and commerce in the area. Although convention center officials are promising good prospects, news of bid-rigging, union workers with connections to Mob links and loss of annual state subsidy are raising doubts whether the center would be capable to meet its goals.
