The elephant population of Thailand is slowly disappearing and efforts are underway to save the troubled species. Throughout Asia this is an increasing problem because of poachers who ignore the endangered-species laws and still practice illegally. The importance of elephants in Thailand and their history within their culture is noted.

Run with the wolves

Expert woodsman Jim Schwartz leads groups into the backcountry around Ely, MN, to hear and possibly glimpse wolves. The gray wolf was almost completely exterminated during the 20th century, but has recently made a comeback. The Wolf Center in Ely provides good information about the species.

Protection efforts that began in the 19th century have helped the American Bison population rebound from near extinction to an estimated 200,000 today. The South Dakota grassland prairie is a great place to see these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. A trip there is described.
