The rate at which infants gain weight and grow in length is more important than where their numbers fall on a chart. A steady rate of growth is not cause for concern, whereas changes in rates can be a symptom of illness. General guidelines to growth are described.

Otitis media: a common ear infection

Otitis media is one of the most common infections among infants and young children. It is caused by fluid build-up in the middle ear, which is often attributed to the small size of their eustachian tubes. Regular antibiotic treatment is often prescribed.
