America's best new adventure towns

Ten American towns offer the best outdoors for adventurers. St George, UT is best for hikers and runners because of its soaring cliffs. Wisconsin's water world is best for canoeing and sailing. The other cities are Fayetville, W VA, Asheville, NC, Lake Placid, NY, Nevada, CA, Ouray, CO, Rockport, ME, Whitefish, MT, and Revelstoke in British Columbia.

Kasha Rigby became the first person to compete in the American Extreme Skiing Championships on telemark skis. Other athletes profiled are: alpine skier Anne Nordhoy, cross country skier Nina Kemppel and snowshoer Rebecca Weiss. Each athlete provides tips on technique in their respective sport.

Downhill, or Alpine, and cross-country, or Nordic, are the two basic types of skiing. Alpine skiing can be exhilarating, and it requires a degree of coordination, while Nordic skiing requires more endurance and is a quieter experience. The gear needed for each type of skiing is discussed.
