There are a number of different tax regulations which relate to a person's family situation. Both partners in a marriage are entitled to a basic personal allowance, and may also claim the married couple's allowance. A man who is receiving an additional personal allowance because he has a dependent child may choose to keep it for the tax year in which he married, rather than claiming the married couple's allowance. In most cases, it is not possible to transfer allowances.
