Article Abstract:
Monuments provide symbols into which people translate their collective force, and an alternative vision of public art is being expressed by women artists in Canada. Veronica Verkley creates temporary monuments using found materials. Her work, on display in Toronto, challenges the assumption that monuments must be permanent shrines to heroes and public authority.

Article Abstract:
Women are a minority in design professions such as architects and engineers. Young and old disabled people require architects and industrial designers address their issues in their work. In the 1970s there existed a sense of denial and shame concerning the problem of the disabled. Cost is a barrier to the success of retrofitting to accessible design standards.
