Plundering the Peten
Article Abstract:
The plunder of Mayan artifacts continues to be a major problem for Guatemala, with looters damaging or destroying sites found in the Mirador Basin in the country's Peten region. The country's government officials began to take action against the looting, which has increased since the 1960s. Illegal trafficking in artifacts has become a big business, generating over $120 million each year. Codex-style pottery works are the most sought after artifacts.
