Author Frances Weaver began her career as a writer in her middle age when she contributed to Vogue and National Observer. Weaver initially based her writing on her personal experiences in her community and enhanced her writing abilities by attending classes at the Adirondack Community College. She attained success through her column entitled 'Midlife Musings,' which was syndicated in newspapers in several states. She has collected the articles into several books and is also publishing a book in hardcover edition through the Walt Disney Co.

Senior citizens who have retired but have become bored with a carefree but uneventful life can land new jobs if they devote extra effort and time to prepare their biodata and continue to sharpen their skills through crash learning courses. They should adopt a positive attitude and desist from assuming that employers discriminate against their age. In fact, many companies would be too glad to recruit experienced and relatively stable workers.

Downtown Harley Davidson co-owner Donna Tom studied industry trends and used her skills in dealing with people to make her motorcycle dealership successful. Tom, who is vice president of the American Business Women's Assn.'s Seattle Evergreen Chapter, semi-retired in July 1996. Her husband Carmen co-owns the dealership which they established in 1983 and currently employs 25 people.
