Choices in personal computer technology
Article Abstract:
There are two main choices in choosing personal computer (PC) technology: the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA), and the Micro Channel Architecture (MCA). ISA is the architecture found in older PCs, while MCA was developed by IBM to prevent cloning of its PCs. The difference between the two is the bus, the component that connects the microprocessor to internal memory and the input-output devices. MCA machines are 25% faster than ISA and are capable of multitasking. Conversion to MCA technology will require investments of time, skill and finances. There are two main criteria in purchasing microcomputer technology; hardware capability and cost. MCA is the choice for hardware capability since it is faster and can support multiple users. For single user environments where cost is a factor, ISA is the better choice.

Money - how much are you worth?
Article Abstract:
Guidelines are discussed for determining fair employee compensation. Techniques are suggested for asking for a raise. Sources of information about prevailing wage rates include: employment agencies; 'Management of an Accounting Practice'; a survey by the California Society of Certified Public Accountants; an accounting firm's hourly billing policy; and salary reviews published by local professional associations. When asking for a raise, accountants should review their past performance and emphasize accomplishments that have provided tangible benefits to the practice. Women accountants should begin to insist on comparable pay.
