Crash course: how to walk in your sleep, and other lessons of an adventure-racing school

Article Abstract:

Adventure racing is popular in Australia and France, but is just beginning to catch on in the US. The sport is team-based and involves several activities that test participants' endurance and navigation skills such as rappeling and kayaking. The Presidio Adventure Racing Academy is described.

Article Abstract:

Proprioceptors are nerve endings that surround muscles and ligaments which transmit spatial information to the brain. If they become injured, the athlete may have trouble executing certain body moves. Athletic trainers have devised a number of exercises to revive and enhance proprioception.
