Defeminizing and dehumanizing female murderers: depictions of lesbians on death row
Article Abstract:
The over-representation of lesbians in death sentence cases as the one exception to leniency toward female murderers is discussed. A homosexualized portrayal of female evil is thought to affect sentencing decisions. Media and prosecutorial representations of five lesbians on death row are used as examples.

Issues are discussed regarding the absence of substantial gender-based sensitivity to criminal courthouse confllict on the part of female public defenders, and that risks to these attorneys' health and career satisfaction are thus lacking.

The authors examine levels and types of sexual abuse of female inmates at a Hawaiian correctional facility. Levels of sexual abuse include trading sex for favors, falling in love, and sex in the line of duty.
