Pernille Spiers-Lopez, who is the manager of IKEA North America has instituted flexi time, full benefits for part-time workers and a diversity plan, among other policies such as environmental issues and children's causes which has created more opportunities for the company. She has initiated many new programs at IKEA like the mentorship program, express yourself program and many other programs.

The contributions of different organizations and companies of the US in the midst of Hurricane Katrina and Rita including Abbot, IKEA, the Marriott International, and the General Electric Company are discussed. The Marriott International opened its doors, thus housing hundreds of displaced families, while Abbot responded by sending medical and nutritional products to those in need.
