Deviant Behavior and Misconduct of Professionals
Article Abstract:
Theories on the reason for misconduct or deviant behavior of individuals are clustered into three major areas: 1) control, 2) societal reaction and 3) socialization. Five studies are reviewed concerning the legal and auditing professions based on the socialization theory. They indicate that the size of the firm is highly correlated with the ethical behavior of the professionals, with the larger firms having the highest degree of compliance with codes of ethics. The local certified public accountant (CPA) reports the highest degree of noncompliance is due to lack of training or moral violations of good professional conduct.
