A 32-year-old female athlete describes her second attempt at running the Marathon des Sables, billed as the toughest footrace in the world. The 150-mile course takes six days to complete and runners must carry their own gear. She did not finish the course but still found the experience inspiring.

Bright lights, big current: swimming around Manhattan gives you a real taste of the city

A woman swimmer describes a 28.5-mile swim around Manhattan Island. The circuit was her 10th and took 9 hours and 35 minutes. She had to overcome problems with currents, waves, jellyfish and ferries in completing the swim.
