Down on the fish farm

The aquaculture industry is booming in the wake of the decline in the number and types of fish found around the world. Farm fish accounts for about 25% of the seafood consumed by Americans every year. About half of the farm fish is raised in the US while the other half comes from foreign suppliers.

Nuked food

Article Abstract:

The irradiation of food promises bacteria-free produce, but the radioactive isotopes used in the process form free radicals which can recombine into molecules that did not exist before. There is a distrust of irradiation in the US, but the first plant to treat food has been opened in Florida.

Buyer beware

Pres Bush signed the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act in Nov 1990, a law that requires food labels to be detailed, accurate and easy to understand. Implications of the new law are discussed.
