A long, hard workout can make people more susceptible to common illnesses because some of their immune cells become dormant for several hours. In contrast, a moderate workout causes greater circulation of the immune cells throughout the body, thereby boosting people's immunity to colds and flu.

Children's need for regular exercise is still uncertain, primarily because little research has been conducted on the subject. But studies do show that childhood obesity has been increasing, and that many children have at least one heart-disease risk factor.
