Probable cause?
Article Abstract:
A sexual assault case in England has focused debate on whether probability theory should be explained to jurors in complicated trials involving quantitative scientific evidence. Denis Adams was convicted in Jan 1995 but appealed successfully in Apr 1996. A Sep 1996 retrial resulted in another guilty verdict, and a second appeal is now being heard. The debate centres on the fact that the scientific evidence appears to incriminate Adams, whereas the nonscientific evidence appears to prove him innocent. Some believe that Bayes Rule could help jurors weigh up the evidence.

Sikeston: an ethnographic study of a town and its youth
Article Abstract:
Sikeston, MO, has remained a poor community despite its rich farmlands. The people's economic problems have their roots in the town's agricultural and social history which date back from 1938. The residents' perception of the society's economic and racial divisions as merely typical of small towns prevents them from recognizing the problem and their ability to solve it. Their current focus is increasing their services to the youth to enable the latter to lead better lives, even if it means leaving the town for better opportunities.
