GROOTS: exchanges link grassroots women around the world
Article Abstract:
Grassroots Organizations Together in Sisterhood (GROOTS) is a network uniting women from around the world who have had personal experience of poverty and oppression to create positive changes in their lives. In Apr, 1997, Kenyan women hosted a GROOTS Exchange for women from Uganda, Canada, the US, and Papua New Guinea. They gathered in tin sheds in the slums of Nairobi and visited traditional Maasai homes to discuss community development.

Ak'Tenamit: Guatemalan women's paper making co-op
Article Abstract:
Guatemalan women artisans revived the ancient art of paper making in their forest village and lifted themselves out of 100% unemployment and abject poverty. Independent grassroots organization Project Ak'Tenamit was founded in 1992 and serves 9,000 Q'eqchi' Maya Indians living in 45 remote villages. The paper is sold throughout Guatemala, and the average maker receives $35 a month.

EuroFEM: European women take action
Article Abstract:
EuroFEM is a network set up in 1994 to demonstrate the impact political policy has on people's lives and evaluate projects aimed at addressing women's issues. They publicized the achievements of a workshop in Austria, a communal housing project in Sweden, a safety program in Britain and a women's cooperative in Finland.
