Judge handcuffed, jailed for trying wife beater

Article Abstract:

A county court judge in Texas was jailed for contempt of court for allowing the trial of a defendant who was accused of assaulting his wife. The court ruled that Judge Bonnie Reed committed criminal contempt when she ignored an order from the 4th Court of Appeals to stop the trial of an assault suspect pending a writ of mandamus filed by the defendant's lawyer. However, women's rights advocates criticized the court's decision. They said that Reed has been a staunch advocate of women's rights and should not be punished for a mere technicality.

Texas judge resigns citing political harassment

Article Abstract:

Judge Bonnie Reed of Texas has resigned following a jail sentence for refusal to stop the trial of a violence case. The Texas republican John Longoria's appeal for continuing the case against Michael Ojeda charged with crimes against his wife, was denied on the grounds that the victim's life was at risk. The Texas law necessitates the granting of continuance of cases for a legislator during the session and the refusal of Judge Reed draws action against her though the case was fixed for a day when the legislature was in recess.

Sexual harassment: why is society shocked?

Article Abstract:

Several research and surveys indicated that sexual harassment cases have increased at an alarming rate. Findings also showed that sexual harassment commonly occurs in male-dominated workplaces and other fields such as the military. There also have been increasing reports of sexual harassment being committed by teachers, doctors, lawyers and clergy. Moreover, a 1993 survey also showed that 85% public school female students in grades eight to 11 had been sexually harassed by their male classmates.
