L. A. accountant?
Article Abstract:
A recent survey of 101 high school students participating in a Junior Achievement (JA) program and planning to pursue a career in accounting revealed that they chose accounting because it promised realistic benefits in the future. The JA program, which exposes students to business, played a key role in their decision by providing them with insight into the accounting profession. Of the 101 students in the focus group, 70% were juniors or seniors the previous year, slightly less than two-thirds were female, and a little over 78% were white. Twenty of the respondents said accounting was a more prestigious profession than the other fields listed in the survey, including law, teaching, and politics. Ten respondents reported that they felt accounting was the most respected profession while 29 said the accounting profession would be the most interesting.

Accountants as change agents
Article Abstract:
The implementation of variable costing for internal purposes in 48 manufacturing companies was studied in order to examine the effectiveness of accountants as organizational change agents. Results revealed that a majority of the chief financial officers and controllers who participated in the study failed to use absorption costing and variable costing for external and internal purposes according to prescriptions. Those who were able to successfully implement variable costing for internal purposes were the ones who recognized that both technical and human relations skills are essential in facilitating change effectively.

Positioning yourself: how to be in the right place at the right time
Article Abstract:
There are several techniques that can help accountants develop their career and position themselves for the best opportunity. Small, fast growth companies are the best option because they are looking for experience as well as potential, they offer more advancement opportunities, and they are less likely to discriminate on age or sex. Accountants should look for a good match between their skills and the job in question, and demand the most money possible.
