Late-pregnancy tests

Article Abstract:

Doctors may order several tests during late pregnancy if they suspect a problem or if the pregnancy is postterm. These are the ultrasound, nonstress test, contraction stress test, biophysical profile, amniocentesis, or cordocentesis. Procedures and purposes of each test are described.

Understanding ultrasound

Article Abstract:

Ultrasonic imaging in obstetrics is most valuable in determining fetal abnormalities and any maternal complications for high-risk pregnancies. Ultrasound is the safest method of diagnostic imaging because the procedure uses sound waves which are not harmful to both mother and fetus.

Eating right

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women should eat grain products, fruits, vegetables, dairy products and protein. Folic acid may reduce the risk of having a baby with neural tube defects or a cleft lip or palate. Some vitamins, such as vitamin A, are harmful when taken in large amounts.
