This article discusses the mythological images of 'fair and virginal' good women and 'dark and sensual' bad women and how it has influenced the social construction of knowledge and popular culture. The authors, focusing on the myth of Lilith, Adam's first wife, examine how the madonna/whore duality shaped 20th century criminology, arguing female criminals have been stereotyped as masculine in behavior.
