Making the best of bed rest

Article Abstract:

Pregnant women who are at risk of delivering early are often prescribed bed rest. They can suffer from depression and anxiety if they do not have emotional support. The services of several groups that provide support are described. Ways to be comfortable are also presented.

The number of women who have typical vaginal deliveries and are released from the hospital the next day continues to increase as insurers and HMOs work to decrease stay time. The average length of stay dropped from 3.9 days to 2.1 days from 1970 to 1992.

The epidural: pros and cons

Article Abstract:

Epidural anesthesia can relieve much or all of the pain associated with labor and allow a woman to remain alert. The benefits and risks associated with its administration should be considered before entering the hospital for delivery.
