Putting together a firm-wide MAS strategy

Article Abstract:

Accounting firms that are considering making a move into management advisory services (MAS) need to develop a detailed MAS marketing plan. Basic MAS planning should involve: assessing the profit potential of MAS in particular areas; evaluating different categories within MAS; and choosing MAS categories that will be the most profitable. Evaluating MAS market attractiveness involves: evaluating current and future needs of clients; identifying other services that may be attractive to clients; evaluating market size and growth potential; and evaluating competition from other accounting firms. Accounting firms that are entering MAS should also evaluate their staff's skill levels and develop training programs in the areas of computer technology and expert systems.

Theory and practice: combining the efforts of internal and independent auditors: using EDP to maximize audit resources

Article Abstract:

Audit clients and the public are pressing accounting firms to increase the scope of the normal audit without increasing audit fees. One method for attaining this goal is cooperative auditing that emphasizes joint usage by external and internal auditors of audit clients' computer resources. Cooperative auditing allows internal client-employed accountants to perform some of the work normally required of junior staff from the external auditing firm. The discussion of cooperative auditing highlights efficiencies achievable through such organization and the software packages and software spreadsheets that should be used by internal auditors to assist the outside auditors. Appropriate functions to perform with various spreadsheet softwares are identified as well.
