Measuring productivity: a look at what the coal mining industry does
Article Abstract:
Increasing overall productivity in the surface coal mining industry requires the measurement and improvement of the unit operations drilling, blasting, overburden removal, and coal loading and hauling. The productivity of drilling is measured by penetration rate, the distance the drill bit travels through overburden per time. The productivity of blasting is measured by the quantity of explosives required to shatter a unit of overburden material. Overburden removal can be accomplished by dozer, truck and loader, or dragline. Dozer productivity is measured by the volume of overburden material moved per unit of time. The productivity of truck and loader can be measured by the number of truck loads or the volume of material per unit of time. Dragline productivity is measured by the number of dragline swings per unit of time. If necessary, the overall productivity can be measured in tons produced per man shift.

Does gender affect internal auditors' performance?
Article Abstract:
A recent study of the on-the-job performance of 71 staff auditors in the internal audit department of a major multi-national corporation, 44 of whom were male and 27 of whom were female, was conducted to ascertain the affect of gender perceptions on internal auditors' performance. Subjects were rated by a supervisor and asked to answer a questionnaire concerning job satisfaction, motivation, and organizational and professional commitment. The study revealed that the performances of male internal auditors were rated higher despite the fact that women earned higher grades in school and reported higher motivation and job satisfaction than male subjects. Clear differences in performance were apparent from the survey, but neither gender consistently scored higher or out performed the other, indicating the complexity of the performance appraisal process.

Look before you lease
Article Abstract:
Leasing office or retail space should begin with finding a good real estate broker. Location is important, and it is often worthwhile to pay for high-profile space, especially in retail. All contracts should be scrutinized by a real estate attorney.
