NOW Foundation calls for better television

Article Abstract:

National Organization for Women (NOW) Foundation and its call for better television coverage of feminist causes are discussed. The foundation has launched the Digital Broadcast Project to deal with the prevailing climate and the situation of nine major corporations' owning or controlling almost all radio, television, and print outlets of the US. FCC action and concern about use of the public airwaves to generate an estimated $115 bil in revenues each year, have been called for.

National Conference sets busy schedule for year 2000

Article Abstract:

The national conference of the National Organization for Women, hled in July, 1999, in Los Angeles, set up a busy schedule for year 2000. A Virtual March, an online rally intended to unite feminists across the US over the Internet, is planned. A national action in Washington, D.C., will be staaged as a part of the World March of Women 2000, a global event started by women in Quebec, Canada.

Collins shatters space ceiling

Article Abstract:

The achievements of Eileen Collins, who on July 23, 1999, became the first female to command a space shuttle mission, are discussed. The Columbia under her command orbited for five days. Only one in five US astronauts is a woman and only 17% of applicants to the astronaut program are female. Young women should be encouraged to pursue careers in the sciences and aviation.
