NOW activists launch 1998 Women of Color and Allies Summit
Article Abstract:
The National Organization for Women has organized a summit meeting slated on Feb 20-22, 1999, to tackle civil rights issues facing minorities and women. Women from all over the US will discuss ways to advance the struggle for equality. The summit will touch on the implications of the California legislation which banned affirmative action programs from the state. A direct impact of this law had been the big drop in admissions rate for minorities at the University of California system. The conference will also open discussions on the plight of poor women under revised welfare laws.

Twenty-five years after Title IX: women gain in steps, not leaps
Article Abstract:
Congress passed Title IX in 1972 to force high schools, colleges and universities to provide equal athletic opportunities to both male and female enrollees. The requirements of Title IX have been reinforced by the passing of the Civil Rights Restoration Act. Despite these laws, several educational institutions still provide girls and women little access to athletic participation. Two such schools are California State University and the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. They only complied to the laws when the National Organization for Women sued them.
