NOW celebrates activism with election year flair: conference highlights past, present, future

Article Abstract:

National Organization for Women's (NOW) 30th Anniversary National Conference in Las Vegas, NV, from Jun 28-30, 1996, was highlighted by speeches about the past achievements, current activities and future directions of the NOW. Now Pres Patricia Ireland and Claudia Crown Ades, one of the 1966 NOW Woman of Courage Award recipients, endorsed the re-election of Pres Clinton during their speeches. Other keynote speakers and awardees are Mimi Ramsey, founder of a group that opposes female genital mutilation and Rachel Buchanan, a 17-year-old high school student activist.

Global campaign aims to end "sekura hara": Mitsubishi target of protests by U.S. and Japanese feminists

Article Abstract:

National Organization for Women (NOW) Action VP Rosemary Dempsey visited Japan to raise awareness about sexual harassment in the country and to protest the way Mitsubishi Motors Corp is handling sexual harassment complaints against its US subsidiary. Her week-long visit, which was sponsored by Japanese feminist groups, ended in simultaneous international demonstrations in Jun 27, 1996. In the US, NOW activists demonstrated outside Mitsubishi dealerships in several cities.

Hello Columbus as NOW conference heads to Ohio

Article Abstract:

The National Organization for Women will hold its annual conference in the Columbus, OH, from Jul. 21-23, 1995. The conference will focus on language and strategy for a new Equal Rights Amendment. In addition, 40 workshops will be held to address a number of women's rights issues, including welfare rights, violence against women, affirmative action, health care and lesbian rights.
