Women go center stage in affirmative action debate

Article Abstract:

Women's and civil rights leaders have embarked on a high-level campaign as a sign of protest against the Republican leaders' attempt to repeal all federal affirmative action programs. They claimed that politicians are adopting a divide-and-conquer strategy to give a new meaning to affirmative action and preserve sexual and race discrimination in the workplace. They also urged public officials to stop relying on poll data and start implementing affirmative programs that will allow women to assume executive positions.

Affirmative action has widespread support

Article Abstract:

National Organization for Women Pres. Patricia Ireland believes that affirmative action is enjoying widespread support among women's rights and human rights activists. Ireland said this can be attributed to the people's growing awareness of what affirmative action can do to promote equal opportunities for women and people of color. She based her claims on the results of the recent Women's Equality Polls which was held from Mar. 16 to Apr. 3, 1995.
