N.Y. to host young feminist summit & 40th anniversary conference

Article Abstract:

NOW activists are to meet at the Crown Plaza Hotel in downtown Albany, New York from July 21-23, 2006 for Young Feminist Summit and to celebrate 40th anniversary of their organization. The program would feature workshops on topics that NOW's Young Feminist Task Force has suggested such as emergency contraception, feminism in music, sex trafficking, women's health, equal marriage and an Intergenerational Fishbowl.

Ireland steps down, conference delegates elect Gandy new president

Article Abstract:

The National Organization for Women (NOW) celebrated its 35th anniversary with a national conference that focused on leadership and social issues. NOW saluted departing president Patricia Ireland and other feminist leaders. New president Kim Gandy was elected. Other issues touched on include economic justice, feminism for girls and postpartum depression.

Latina girls' high school drop-out rate highest in the U.S

Article Abstract:

More Hispanic-American girls drop out of high school than any other population group. Cultural and peer pressure, pregnancy and early marriage are some of the reasons behind the high drop out rate. Educators and feminists can help by working to raise the esteem of Latino girls and offering special programs to help them achieve.
