The Women's Sports Foundation receives almost 500 calls per week questioning the importance of physical education to girls. The Foundation has compiled answers to some of the most common questions on topics such as competition, motivation and the psychological advantages of playing sports.

Striking the balance: in the struggle with eating disorders, athletes have a lot on their side

Article Abstract:

A 1995 Gallup Poll found that 20% of college-aged women and 10% of adult women suffer from eating disorders. Female athletes can be especially vulnerable because of the pressure to maintain ideal body weight. However, generally, sports help women to cope with weight and identity issues.

Article Abstract:

The Education Amendments Act of 1972 was to safeguard the equal opportunity in sports for women and girls in programs that receive federal money. But the Equity Disclosure Act of 1996 revealed that more than 90% of schools and colleges are not yet in compliance with the 1972 law.
