Article Abstract:

Homophobia affects the athletic decisions of both homosexual and heterosexual women. Lesbians are often afraid to take scholarships at high-profile colleges. Heterosexual women opt out of sports because they fear being labeled lesbians. Women's sports leaders believe the answer is to bring the issue out into the open.

Sports enthusiasts can exchange information and meet other like-minded people by accessing one of the hundreds of specialized sports computer bulletin boards. There are three main services, America Online, CompuServe and Prodigy and basic service costs about $10 per month.

More women are being accepted as players on formerly male-only teams by their teammates. Several women athletes discuss their struggles to become team members and the progress that women have made in the male-dominated athletic field.
