Taming the wild west
Article Abstract:
American Cowboy, a bimonthly magazine, received a major makeover. Besides a cosmetic revamping, the publication's editors reorganizes the contents into three categories; departments, thematic features and feature articles. The renewed cover sports a new logo and photography. The stunning makeover led to an increase in newstand sales of between 12 and 15 percent. A firm design rule in the makeover was to avoid simulated Western looks, such as fonts that look like ropes. The new design also revamped the table of contents to make it clearer, and to differentiate special features from regular features. Part of the magazine is produced on Adobe PageMaker on a Macintosh, the balance is done with QuarkXPress on Windows.
