Protein: how much is enough?

Article Abstract:

It is important to eat enough protein to help maintain and repair the body. Yet too much protein can stress or damage organs such as the kidneys and liver. Vegetarians should eat a variety of vegetables to get the nine essential amino acids usually provided by animal protein.

The USDA has developed the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) to help determine the quality of the average American diet. The HEI is divided into 10 parts that evaluate the basic food components such as fat, cholesterol or protein. A variation of the HEI is presented.

Good news about cholesterol: women don't need to worry as much as men do

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that premenopausal women with high cholesterol levels have a much lower chance than their male counterparts of developing heart disease. Estrogen seems to protect women against heart disease before menopause.
