Rape survivor speaks out
Article Abstract:
Instances of sexual harassment and rape are on the rise in the US, especially in colleges and universities. A 1992 survey reveals that around 6,83,000 women are raped every year. Another survey indicates that most of the rape victims in colleges are familiar with the criminals and a large number of them are in an intoxicated state at the time of the rape. Colleges and universities have taken steps to prevent rapes on campus and an organization called Security on Campus, Inc., works to pass federal and state laws on violence against women on the campus.

VAWA victory, setbacks
Article Abstract:
The efforts of the National Organization for Women (NOW) have led to the conviction of a man who beat his wife until she lapsed into a coma. Under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), crossing a state line to assault a spouse or a domestic partner is a crime punishable by imprisonment of up to 20 years. The NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund is setting up a clearing house on violence against women to highlight the legal remedies found in VAWA.
