1996 marked the the 25th anniversary of Title IX, the legislation that guarantees equal sports opportunities to women and girls. The 1996 Olympics showcased many excellent female athletes and teams, and an increasing number of professional women athletes were awarded sponsorships.

Our own worst enemy?

Women still face discrimination from men in sports, but instead of being supportive, women oftentimes are critical of each other. A rhythmic gymnast describes how she is sometimes made to feel like a lesser athlete because other women do not understand the appeal of her sport.

Women and girls are participating in team sports at record levels, even nontraditional sports such as football and wrestling. Title IX opened the doors, and factors such as college varsity programs, corporate sponsorships and high profile women's teams have fueled the trend.
