Families not at risk of genetic diseases are not advised to bank umbilical cord blood which is used to treat disorders including severe anemias and certain cancers. The initial cost of cord blood harvesting and storage is pegged at $1,000 to $1,500, plus up to $150 in annual maintenance fees.
