Simple tests - important answers about your newborn

Article Abstract:

Phenylketonuria, hypothyroidism and galactosemia tests on newborns are required in all 50 states. Additional screening tests required in select states are sickle-cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The diseases all require immediate therapy after diagnosis.

Late-pregnancy tests: who needs them and why

Tests performed during the last few weeks of pregnancy can help determine the health of the uterus and the fetus. One of these tests, a non-stress test, monitors the fetus' heart rate. Other tests include a biophysical profile and amniocentesis.

The risks of cocaine use during pregnancy

One of the greatest threats to the health of an unborn child is the mother's use of cocaine during pregnancy. The effects of cocaine on unborn babies and newborns are discussed.
