Stress in AWSCPA members

Article Abstract:

Accounting is often considered a stressful profession and it has been assumed that women, due to career-family conflicts and entrance into a traditionally male profession, suffer additional stress. A study of stress on women accountants was conducted based on the Everly Stress and Symptom Inventory (ESSI), a psychometric instrument for measuring emotional arousal. Emotional arousal is considered to be a factor in subsequent development of actual physical stress. Study respondents were 193 members of the American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants. Data was analyzed to assess the stress arousal rate of women CPAs in relation to other groups, as well as to determine the differences in stress arousal amongst women CPA sub-populations. Research results indicate that respondents in the top management categories suffer more stress than the rank and file but, overall, the number of respondents reporting levels of stress arousal that may lead to subsequent physical stress-related illnesses falls into a normal range.

Stress management: an interview with Barbara Mackoff, author of Leaving the Office Behind

Article Abstract:

Barbara Mackoff, author of Leaving the Office Behind, recommends that people relieve work-related tension by: exercising; learning to laugh at themselves; reviewing the day's work prior to leaving the office; and talking about work to their spouses early in the evening (rather than toward the evening's end). Spouses should be careful when describing their day to edit the story (keeping it short) and to shade their emotions (to avoid exaggeration). Listening spouses should learn to paraphrase what they hear (to show they are paying attention) and should avoid telling the other person how to handle a given situation or telling the other person not to take work so seriously. Mackoff also discusses managing stress when the professional has children at home, entertaining business associates, and developing a support group of friends, in her interview following her speech before 46th annual conference of the American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Society of Women Accountants.

AWSCPA & ASWA: a 50 year perspective

Article Abstract:

The American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA) and the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA) were established over 50 years ago to address the needs of female accountants. Some of the shared goals of the two organizations are to help members advance in their careers as accountants and to improve their knowledge and efficiency within the accounting profession. Although the ASWA is a creation of the AWSCPA, it has its own constitution and by-laws, and is highly autonomous. The two organizations, however, work very closely and have been involved in joint activities from the very beginning.
