Johnson, 64, took up the sport of rowing eight years ago and is now a top competitor in her age group at masters events. She discovered that rowing helped her chronic asthma, improved her endurance and helped her deal with trauma surrounding her son Christopher Reeve's disabling accident.

Recent research by philosophers, social scientists and psychologists found that constant competition is detrimental but controlled competition can be beneficial. Setting personal goals can increase the performance level in a sport and creativity level of an artistic pursuit.
