The dog days of winter

Article Abstract:

Pets can be kept happy during winter in various ways. These include rinsing their paws in warm water after a walk, fortifying their diets, regular brushing, a winter coat and one or two walks daily. Cats should be kept indoors during the season and fed a low-calorie diet to prevent excessive weight gain.

Yukon Medical Assn. Pres. Dr. Roger Mitchell offers pointers for dealing with winter emergencies, such as frostbite, hypothermia, falls, and snow blindness. He advises immersing areas affected by frostbite in warm water, while hypothermia victims must be brought to the hospital immediately.

Heart-attack survivors can prevent another attack by making dramatic changes in the way they live. These include exercising, eating the right foods and keeping their stress levels down. They can be assured, however, that they will still be able to perform the tasks of day-to-day living.
