Ski skating is an offshoot of cross country skiing. However the technique is different and the skis are 15 cm shorter than the regular version. The new sport was started by Bill Koch who became the only US male to win the Nordic World Cup in 1982. Of the 4 mil Nordic US skiers, about half also skate ski.

Ski manufacturers, inspired by the success of snowboarding, have introduced a whole new line of parabolic, or super-sidecut skis. These skis have wider tips and tails and are usually shorter. This facilitates turning and speed. Details about a few models of skis and boots are presented.
