The role of incest in developmental theory and treatment of women diagnosed with borderline personality disorder
Article Abstract:
The common incidence of incest history in women diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) has not been considered in BPD developmental theory nor added to treatment strategies. BPD developmental theory needs to recognize the number of women with incest history and adopt some of the treatment techniques used for adult survivors of incest to adequately treat women with that combination. The theory focuses on mother-blaming as the cause of BPD and so fails to consider father-blaming when the patient was in an incestuous father-daughter relationship.
