The experiences of Heidi Heitkamp during her diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and her bid to become Democratic governor of North Dakota are described. Her decision to continue campaigning and her attitude towards her cancer are explored.

Issues relating to breast cancer are presented. Breast cancer is the leading cause of deaths in women aged between 20 and 39 and is considered to be particularly lethal in the young, since cancer cells grow more quickly before menopause.
