Article Abstract:
The screenplay for "The Great Debaters", which was directed and starred by Denzel Washington, was inspired by the Wiley College debate team. It followed the story of English professor Melvin Tolson, and how he led one of the top debate teams in the United States. The life of Tolson, and the triumphs and challenges that the debate team faced, are discussed.

All three actors considered working on the film as a history lesson. Their acting backgrounds, the roles they played, and how they prepared for the movie, are discussed.
