Reassessing workplace bonuses
Article Abstract:
The provision of incentives or bonuses to employees has some disadvantages. People tend to focus on the incentives rather than on their jobs. Also, these rewards often have to be raised to maintain the initial satisfaction level. Bonuses also make workers feel that they are being controlled. Instead of the bonus system, management should ensure that salaries are fair, ask for suggestions from employees to make them feel they are in control of their work, and not resort to downsizing which engenders disloyalty.
