An increasing amount of attention is being given to family medical history and to the clues it may offer about a patient's medical future. Genetic counseling can help in early detection of diseases. Emphasis is put on diseases that occur in adulthood and diseases that are curable.

The relationship between tanning and skin cancer is widely known, but cases of skin cancer continue to rise at an annual rate of 3%. A survey of 266 college students indicated an awareness of the dangers of melanoma, but most still considered it important to have a tan.

TB on the rise: a deadly disease makes a grim comeback

Tuberculosis is on the increase in the US, with 16% more cases in 1992 than in 1984. The disease had been declining in the US for most of the 20th century, but the increase in AIDS cases and overcrowded hospitals have contributed to the trend's reversal.
