Proud and wary, prison project director bows out
Article Abstract:
Alvin J Bronstein has left the post of executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union's National Prison Project, which he held from its 1972 founding until Jan 1, 1996. In discussing the Prison Project's history he notes a change of focus from totality cases to specific issues, and calls for greater emphasis on policy questions such as good prison structures for super-max facilities. Given recent trends he fears a reversion to the situation of 25 years ago, with reform pressure coming only from outside.
